One of the applications we develop at work is a GXT web application hosted in tomcat.

GXT Web Development is good or not

Eclipse is good Development tool to create and run the projects based on GWT. We did one project using GXT and I have to say that it was the most expensive project we've ever done by far.

why not to use GXT

GXT is almost as good-looking and snappy UI without needing to know all the cross-browser tricks and without needing to be a great designer. no doubt GXT could be better designed, but given the speed of progress it's pretty darn good.

How GXT works with browsers?

GXT has some very nice high level components (grids, portals, etc.) Their components look great, and work well on all the major browsers, but GXT's design doesn't lend itself to easy extension. GXT is an awesome foundation, but most non-trivial applications require use of a library such as GXT or GWT Ext on top of GWT to provide things like nice grids. These libraries just aren't as evolved as frameworks such as Swing, WPF or Flex. This leaves you with the option of creating your own high level components on top of GWT or dealing with immature higher level libraries.

How it secure?

Web based applications also provide an added layer of security by removing the need for the user to have access to the data and back end servers.
